The political blame game broke out between the Centre government and the West Bengal government over Cyclone Fani. According to government sources, the West Bengal government has refused to talk or hold a meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review or to inspect the damage caused by Cyclone Fani.
PM Modi, who reviewed and also inspect the damage caused to Odisha due to Cyclone Fani on Monday, said he wanted to do the same for West Bengal. The Project Management Office had even written to the state about the planned review meeting over the destruction caused by the cyclone in Bengal.
However, sources from the PMO report said that the Mamata Banerjee-led government has replied in a negative way, further added they said that the officials in the state are busy with Lok Sabha polls.
PM Narendra Modi had on Saturday tried to contact West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to discuss the damaged caused by Cyclone Fani in West Bengal but he is not able to do so as his calls were not returned and leave unanswered, reported by a top government official.
In reply, Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress claimed that PM Modi had called Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik but did not try to call the West Bengal Chief Minister to discuss rescue and rehabilitation operations.
Further added, the party claimed that PM Modi only spoke to West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi about the post-Fani situation in the state. However, in reply, The Centre government rubbished the reports earlier.
The top center Government official said that the two attempts were made to connect Modi with Mamata Banerjee over the phone and both times they were told that the call would be returned as Banerjee is on tour. In His Words, he said “Two attempts were made by the prime minister’s staff to connect Modi with Banerjee over the phone. On both the occasions they were told that the call would be returned. On one occasion they were told that the CM is on tour.”
The Trinamool Congress secretary-general Partha Chatterjee named the development as an “attack on the federal structure” After PM Modi contacted West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. He Said that “By calling the Governor, he (PM Modi) has acted as leader of BJP and not as a Prime Minister. How can he deny the mandate of our people? Mamata Banerjee is the elected chief minister of Bengal. This is unfortunate.“
Cyclonic storm Fani devastated the parts of Odisha on Friday, mainly in the coastal areas. The cyclonic storm killed at least 34 people in the state. West Bengal, on the other hand, was subjected to heavy rains but no loss of life was reported.
